Speaking with Whitespace: Empty Is Also Design

DesignSeptember 2026

Whitespace is not empty space. It is one of the most powerful tools in a designer's vocabulary. Good designers know when to leave things empty and let the content speak for itself.

## What whitespace actually is

Whitespace is any area on the page that does not contain content. It can be white, or any other color. The key is not the color but the presence of intentional space.

## Why whitespace matters

Whitespace does three things: it guides the eye, creates rhythm, and improves readability. A page without whitespace is like an article without punctuation—all the information is there, but reading it is exhausting.

## Whitespace strategy for personal brand pages

The first screen needs generous whitespace. Leave breathing room between the value proposition, avatar, and call-to-action so visitors can quickly understand the page intent. Separate content sections with whitespace rather than lines or background colors for a more elegant result.

## Common mistakes

- Fear of blank space, filling every corner with content

- Uneven whitespace, some areas cramped while others feel empty

- Ignoring mobile whitespace, looking good on desktop but cramped on phone

## How to check your whitespace

Shrink the page to mobile width and see whether the content can still breathe. If text is crowding each other, you do not have enough whitespace.
